Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has slammed a section of businesspeople for prioritising profit over the health of Kenyans.
On Wednesday, October 23, Mosiria discovered “smocha” trolleys stored in public toilets along Thika Road, posing serious health risks to the public.
Mosiria disclosed that he was responding to a complaint regarding the unsanitary conditions of a public toilet along Thika Road at the Drive-In footbridge.
“I want to thank the person who discreetly reported the disturbing practice of storing food trolleys and other foodstuffs in a public toilet along Thika Road, specifically at the KEHNA toilets. This shows a shocking disregard for public health, with some prioritizing profit over customer safety, even if it means selling contaminated food,” Mosiria said.

Upon visiting the site with other county officials uncovered that trolleys used for selling eggs and smokies were being stored inside a public toilet.
To make matters worse, ripe bananas and other fruits were also found stored in the same facility.
Mosiria emphasized the need for stricter hygiene standards and reassured the public of his commitment to safeguarding Nairobi’s environment, stressing that such neglect would not be tolerated.
In addition to addressing the current issue, Mosiria outlined plans for enhanced public awareness campaigns and stricter inspections of public facilities to guarantee compliance with sanitation standards.
“We cannot allow this to continue. While arrests may offer a short-term solution, the real need is education on food safety and hygiene. I urge all Nairobi residents to be cautious about where they consume food and to prioritize their health and safety,” he added.
