No food was prepared for lunch, and his mother, with a weary expression, was unsure what the family would eat for supper.

“The father, a charcoal burner, supplements the family’s income through various casual jobs,” he said.

Despite his efforts, their living conditions are dismal as the family shares a single blanket and has no mattress.

At night, they huddle together for warmth, using torn clothes as makeshift covers.

The little boy and his siblings walk over 8 kilometres to and from school every day, facing the elements barefoot.

They rely on a seasonal stream for water, but they are forced to trek even further to find a source when it dries up.

Electricity is a luxury they cannot afford.

At night, a small D-light solar lamp lights their home, their only illumination source as they struggle to survive.

This family’s story, especially the image of the boy graduating without shoes, touched the hearts of many across the country.
