Nairobi – President William Ruto’s administration has made good its promise to raise the minimum wage to uplift the welfare of workers.

In May this year, Ruto directed the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection to operationalise multiple wage councils, among others, seafarers and protective, general and agricultural workers.

While making the promise, the president said the increment would enhance conciliation, mediation and industrial peace.

According to the gazette notice published by the ministry under CS Alfred Mutua, the new councils will range from unskilled workers to skilled labourers and drivers, ensuring that all employees in the sector receive fair compensation.

For instance, an unskilled employee will earn a minimum monthly wage of KSh 7,997.33, or KSh 335.86 per day.

A stockman or herdsman, who typically handles livestock, will see their wages rise to KSh 9,235.78 monthly, or KSh 391.14 per day.

For semi-skilled positions, such as house servants or cooks, the monthly wage is set at KSh 9,129.41, or KSh 347.63 daily.

Higher skilled roles like farm foremen and farm clerks will earn KSh 14,427.13 per month, translating to KSh 609.66 per day.

Similarly, senior foremen will receive a minimum of KSh 9,339.66 monthly, or KSh 397.13 per day. Specialised positions such as farm artisans will earn KSh 9,558.66 per month, while tractor drivers will take home KSh 10,136.30 monthly, or KSh 430.52 per day.

Operators of complex machinery like combine harvesters will earn KSh 11,166.62 per month, and lorry or car drivers will see a wage of KSh 11,718.67 per month, or KSh 496.72 per day.
