Governor Barchok, Wangamati ordered to appear before EACC on Monday


 

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has summoned Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati on Monday, September 1, 2025, at its headquarters at 8 am in person on corruption-related charges for processing and arraignment.

The directive comes after the commission received consent from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to charge the two over allegations of conflict of interest alongside other suspects over embezzlement of public funds.

“The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) received consent from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to charge the Governor, County Government of Bomet, Hillary Kipng’eno Barchok… and Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati, former governor of Bungoma, over allegations of embezzlement of funds,” read the statement.

Additionally, the commission has summoned Michael Simiyu Wangamati, Director, Skyman Freighters Ltd and Nabwala Construction Limited, Nicholas Wangamati – Director, Skyman Freighters Ltd and Nabwala Construction Limited, Edward Barasa Wangamati – Director, Skyman Freighters Ltd and Nabwala Construction Limited, Edward Maaya Makhanu – Director, Fastect Suppliers Ltd, Kelco Builders, Mundesi Contractors Ltd, Nabweso Builders Ltd and Valeria Construction Ltd to shade light into the allegations.

Others summoned include: Sandra Soita Nasambu – Accountant at Skyman Freighters Ltd and Director Fastec Suppliers Ltd, Kelco Builders Ltd, and Valeria Construction Ltd, Wafula Wakoli Chesititi – Supervisor, Skyman Freighters Ltd and Director Fastec Suppliers Ltd, Kelco Builders Ltd, and Valeria Construction, Bramwel Mukewe Wafula, Juma Swaleh Juma – Director, Fastec Suppliers Ltd, Kelco Builders Ltd and Valeria Construction Ltd;

On the long list, also those directed to appear before the EACC headquarters are Jimmy Wekesa Barasa – Director, Calisilanic Building & CO. Contractors Ltd and Nasikhub Civil Contractors Ltd, Christopher Masika Makokha – Director, Calisilanic Building & CO. Contractors Ltd and Nasikhub Civil Contractors Ltd, Joseph Wanyonyi Khaemba – Director, Nasikhub Civil Contractors Ltd.

On Thursday, the Director of Public Prosecutions ordered the prosecution of Bomet Governor Barchok and former Bungoma Governor Wangamati on corruption-related charges.

The directive follows recommendations from the EACC on allegations of conflict of interest and embezzlement of public funds.

“Upon thorough review, I have directed that Hillary Kipngeno Barchok be charged as follows: Conflict of Interest contrary to section 42(3) as read with section 48 of The Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003, and unlawful acquisition of public property,” read a statement by DPP Renson Ingonga.

Governor Barchok is to be prosecuted alongside Evans Kipkoech, the Director of Chemasus Construction.

Wangamati has been accused of embezzlement of funds amounting to Sh70million through private companies.

“I have directed that the following individuals be charged as follows: Wycliffe Wangamati for conflict of interest, Michael Wangamati, Nicholas Wangamati, Edward Wangamati and Nabwala Construction Limited for acquisition of proceeds of crime,” added the DPP.

Marsabit Governor Mohamed Mohamud Ali is also trapped in the fraud net, and will be prosecuted for allegedly colluding with other companies to win a tender worth Sh728 million.

The DPP has further directed an investigation on Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi on allegations of irregularity in procurement in awarding tenders worth Sh230 million.
