Gachagua’s return: Standard Group, RMS journalists attacked


What began as a political procession on Thursday quickly descended into chaos as goons unleashed violence along Mombasa Road, leaving journalists injured and vehicles damaged.

Reporters from Standard Group and Royal Media Services (RMS) were caught in the violence while covering the return of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.Standard Group and RMS journalists attacked on Mombasa Road while covering DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua’s procession to Kamukunji; company vehicle damaged.

The situation turned violent when unidentified groups trailing the convoy began pelting stones and blocking sections of the road.

A Standard Group crew comprising Brian Otieno, Collins Oduor, Jeff Kirui, Steven Otieno and Geoffrey Muitai bore the brunt of the attack when their vehicle was rammed by another car. Kirui was also injured and taken to hospital.

Stones shattered its windows, with witnesses describing scenes of panic as the journalists scrambled for safety.

An RMS journalist has also injured and rushed to hospital after being struck while filming the procession.

The convoy, initially on the Eastern Bypass, was diverted to Enterprise Road before returning to Mombasa Road. Leaders accompanying former DP includes Senator John Methu(Nyandarua), Joe Nyutu Murang’a), Karung’o Wathang’wa (Kiambu), Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina, Embakasi South MP Julius Mawathe, former Starehe MP Maina Kamanda among others.
