Prime suspect in two KNH murders arrested


The main suspect linked to two killings  at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Nairobi has been arrested.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, identified as Kennedy Kalombotole, is believed to be behind the gruesome murder of Edward Maingi Ndegwa, a patient who had been admitted to Ward 7B, Group C on July 11.

According to KNH, Ndegwa was killed yesterday.

Initial reports indicate that a nurse had checked on the patient at 11:30am, and taken his blood pressure.

At 12:30pm, a relative visited and found him in stable condition, leaving the ward around 1:30pm.

However, at approximately 2.00pm, a cleaner noticed a pool of blood around the patient’s neck.

“Upon visiting the scene, detectives noticed bloody slippers prints from the victim’s bedside to a nearby toilet and eventually to a side room, where the (suspect) was admitted,” DCI said.

In the room, investigators recovered a pair of blue slippers and a blood-stained bedsheet.

Outside, on the ground directly beneath the seventh-floor window of the deceased’s ward, police also recovered a knife wrapped in gloves.

Investigations show the suspect was admitted to KNH on December 1, 2024.

He is also the prime suspect in the killing of Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, 40, who was murdered in Ward 7C during the night of February 6–7, 2025.

The suspect is in custody and is being processed pending arraignment.

Thursday, July 17,KNH, Chief Executive Officer Dr William Sigilai released a statement of the death of a patient Edward Maingi Ndegwa after which the police launched probe.

According to Dr Sigilai the patient, physically disabled was discovered around 2 p.m. in Ward Seven shortly after visiting hours, according to police and hospital officials.

‘’On the afternoon of 17 July 2025 at around 2 pm immediately after visiting hours , a patient was discovered in a medical ward in blood- soaked bleeding. The patient was examined and certified dead,’’he said.

“This tragic incident has deeply saddened us and our thoughts and prayers are with the patient’s family during this difficult time,” said Dr William Sigilai, who issued a statement for the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer.

Top officers, including Kilimani Police Commander Patricia Yegon and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kilimani boss Hussein Mahat, spent Thursday afternoon at the scene gathering evidence.
