The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) has urged Kenyans to ignore remarks made by politicians about election malpractices in the country.

In a statement on Sunday, the commission has disregarded the remarks, noting that the country is yet to go into the campaign period.

“Such utterances are unacceptable and reckless in a democratic society such as ours, and IEBC urges all Kenyans to ignore or disassociate with them,” IEBC stated.

The electoral body noted that it is yet to constitute the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee, which has jurisdiction only during the election period.

“It should be noted that the IEBC has not declared any elections. Further, there is no gazettement or declaration that has been made to warrant such desirous political utterances and propaganda,” the commission added. 

“The country is not in a campaign period at the moment”. 

The commission has expressed willingness to engage with stakeholders, including the political parties and leaders, to discuss how to restore public trust and confidence in electoral processes and outcomes.

It has further urged the political class to refrain from actions and speeches that could erode public trust and confidence.

The IEBC has raised concerns after a section of politicians launched attacks on the new commissioners barely a day after they were sworn into office.

“To the new IEBC, please do not try Kenyans. Already, the irregularities are far too many. Therefore, stand warned that any attempt to tamper with the electoral process will be met with unrelenting resistance. The will of the people is not negotiable,” Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka stated on his X account.

IEBC has vowed to safeguard its independence and impartiality while discharging its constitutional mandate in delivering fair and credible elections.
