The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has raised concerns over the conduct of police during Wednesday’s nationwide protests marking the anniversary of the 2024 anti-tax demonstrations.

In a statement released on June 25, 2025, IPOA said it had launched nationwide monitoring operations, deploying officers across the country to observe how the National Police Service was managing public order.

“The Authority has also dispatched representatives to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) Situation Room to enhance collaboration in real-time monitoring of the unfolding demonstrations,” the statement read in part.

According to preliminary findings, IPOA documented demonstrations in at least 24 counties, resulting in eight civilian deaths and over 207 injuries, many of which involved gunshot wounds.

Injuries among police officers were also recorded, though no specific figures were provided.

Authorities reported the arrest of at least 61 protestors, as well as the infiltration of demonstrations by goons, leading to widespread destruction of both public and private property.

IPOA expressed particular concern over what it termed “excessive and varied force” used by police, including the use of live ammunition, tear gas, water cannons, whips, and batons.

“Officers were also reported to have concealed their identities, a move the Authority said contravenes legal provisions on police accountability,” it added.

The Authority stated that its monitoring operations would continue overnight and pledged to release a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations to relevant state organs.
