Fresh from a spectacular 3000m steeplechase victory at the Oslo Diamond League meet on June 12, Olympic bronze medallist Faith Cherotich is this evening chasing glory once more in Paris.
This time, Cherotich will be lining up without her main challenger this season, Kenyan-born Bahraini star Winfred Yavi, who is the reigning Olympic champion.
She will instead be fighting off opposition from Olympic gold medallist Peruth Chemutai of Uganda in the women’s 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Diamond League.
Cherotich has been in top form this season and has displayed it by stunning Yavi twice – in Doha last month and recently in Oslo, sending a strong message ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo this September.
Chemutai has not been dominant this season after finishing seventh in Doha, where Cherotich took the top honours.
The eighth leg of the Diamond League circuit will see French star Alice Finot also pose a strong challenge in the event to be staged at the Stade Charlety.
The European record holder in the 3000m steeplechase will have another opportunity to revel in the thrills this evening, in front of a packed Charléty Stadium.
Also lining up in the women’s 3000m steeplechase mix is Ethiopian Sembo Almayew who placed 10th in Xiamen in April.
Olympian and world silver medallist Jacob Krop is featured in the men’s 5000m and will be competing alongside Boaz Kiprugut.
Two-time Olympic champion of the 3,000m steeplechase, Sofiane El Bakkali of Morocco will be competing in the 5000m event.
The Kenyan duo and El Bakkali alongside Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, who boasts not less than ten Diamond League victories as well as homeboy, French star Jimmy Gressier among others will be the top contenders for the top position.
Krop was 11th in Oslo and will be looking to redeem himself at the Paris meeting tonight.
African gold medallist Abel Kipsang is leading the Kenyan charge in a strong 1500m field.
Kipsang, a two-time Diamond League winner, will have the company of Festus Lagat and Phanuel Koech in the men’s 1500m race in Paris.
Nelly Chepchirchir and Susan Ejore are the Kenyan stars to watch in the women’s 1500m competition.
