Busia Senator Okiyah Omtatah has called for a complete overhaul of the police command, citing a culture of impunity and lack of accountability following the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

Speaking on Spice FM on Monday, June 16, Omtatah said the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death suggest a deliberate cover-up by police, describing the incident as “a murder” backed by autopsy findings that indicated the injuries appeared personal and intentional.

“In the murder of Ojwang, the least we can do is to disband the police command,” Omtatah stated.

He dismissed police claims that CCTV footage was unavailable due to malfunction, accusing officers of deleting crucial evidence and constructing a false narrative to shield those responsible. 

“They are eliminating a neutral arbiter so that their biased story can prevail,” he said.

Omtatah criticized the ongoing investigations as compromised and poorly handled, calling for those involved to step aside to allow for independent and credible inquiries.

 “They are deliberately covering this up with a shoddy investigation,” he charged.

The Senator also condemned recent statements made by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohammed Amin before the Senate, saying they were false and misleading, despite being made under oath. 

His comments came after CCTV footage from Mbagathi Hospital surfaced, contradicting Amin’s claims and further fueling allegations of a police cover-up.

Omtatah urged President William Ruto to take decisive action, saying the credibility of the justice system is at stake.
