The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the death of social media influencer Albert Omondi Ojwang, who died while in custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi.

 In a press statement on Monday, the oversight Chairperson, Ahmed Hassan, said they had visited the scene, documented preliminary evidence, and engaged with the deceased’s family.

“At present, officers are deployed at the City Mortuary where a post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place today, Monday, June 9, 2025,” stated Hassan.

IPOA had also interviewed five officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and recorded statements in connection with the arrest of the deceased.

The findings will guide in taking subsequent actions, including potential recommendations to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) should criminal culpability be established.

Ojwang was arrested on Saturday at his home in Kakot, Homa Bay County, allegedly over a social media post on the X platform.

He was later transferred to Nairobi and held at the Central Police Station. 

Police have linked his death to suspected suicide, detailing that he inflicted injuries on himself after hitting his head on the wall.
