Juja MP fights for his life after abduction

Juja MP George Koimburi is fighting for his life in hospital after he was allegedly abducted and tortured by unknown individuals.

The lawmaker was found unconscious on Monday morning in a coffee plantation in Kibichoi, Kiambu County, hours after he was reportedly picked up by individuals believed to be police officers.

A video widely circulated on social media showed the MP lying on the ground, groaning in pain and appearing disoriented.

He was rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to Karen Hospital in Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who visited Koimburi at the hospital, claimed the MP was abducted by security agents on Sunday, just after attending a church service in Mugutha.

“He was picked up by two undercover officers. His wife was thrown out of the moving Subaru car when she tried to intervene, and she got hurt. He was taken away and dumped in a coffee plantation,” said Gachagua.

The former DP further claimed that the incident was not isolated, linking it to events that took place two days earlier when Koimburi allegedly escaped a botched arrest during a bursary event in Juja.

“Last Friday, he had an event in Gachororo to issue bursaries to children. Police officers from DCI Kiambu stormed the meeting to arrest him. He escaped through the help of the people of Juja, who put him on a motorbike. His vehicle was impounded and driver arrested. The vehicle is currently detained at the DCI Kiambu,” he said.

According to him, the condition of the legislator was dire at the time he was rescued, and he had lost his voice.

“He was badly beaten and in a serious condition. Doctors have confirmed he was tortured by professionals. He has very serious soft tissue injuries and has lost his voice. The doctors are saying he was made to inhale a chemical substance that has interfered with his vocal cords,” said Gachagua.

He added that Koimburi has been communicating with doctors and visitors through writing.

Gachagua said he believes the attack was politically motivated and linked to the association of Koimburi with him.

“His only mistake is that he was in contact with me. On Friday, when he was issuing bursaries, he put me on the speakerphone to greet the people. That is what annoyed the system,” said Gachagua.

Koimburi’s lawyer, Makueni Senator Daniel Maanzo, who also spoke at the hospital where the MP is admitted, confirmed that Koimburi had been abducted, tortured and poisoned.

“The MP was picked up by individuals who did not identify themselves and bundled into a Subaru. He was dumped in a coffee plantation, poisoned and beaten. He cannot talk. He is using sign language and writing on paper,” said Maanzo.

His vehicle, Maanzo said, is now detained at the DCI headquarters in Kiambu, and the people who had come to arrest him on Friday say that he should go for his car there.

Maanzo stated that there was an existing court order barring the arrest of Koimburi, but that was ignored.
