With the postponement of World Men Boxing Championships to November, the national technical bench has been forced re-plan their training programmes for national teams in international assignments this year.
The event, which was set to box-off in June has been pushed back with five months, a development national coach Musa Benjamin welcomed with both hands.
He said this would give them the requisite time to come up with a formidable team in a selection process that had started with Kenya Open Championships hosted at Charter Hall, Nairobi last weekend.
“This give us the leverage to re-plan afresh, a development that also give us and the boxers more time in our training schedules both at the club and national team levels,” Benjamin told Standard Sports.
The global event was set for June at a venue the International Boxing Association (IBA) had not identified owing to the bidding process involving several countries that was yet to be accomplished.
“We are forced to plan afresh after this postponement. We’ll come up with new training schedules for different national teams in the remaining international assignments this year,” said the tactician.
The first leg of the National Boxing League set for Busia from May 15-17 was to be the second selection trials for the Hit Squad that was headed for the global championships.
Yesterday, Benjamin who’s also Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) treasurer said the league will proceed on as earlier planned.
“Despite the few changes, all other league assignments are there to proceed as earlier planned and released by BFK Competitions Secretary John Waweru,” said the national coach.
Besides the global championships, Kenya is set to present teams in the Africa Zone Three Boxing Championships, Africa Boxing Championships and Mandela Cup, all whose dates and venues are yet to be confirmed by the zonal and continental boxing bodies.
