Coast region swimmers overpowered their counterparts from five other regions to emerge overall winners of this year’s Brookside Secondary Schools national Term One games swimming competition.
The home swimmers ruled the pool in a two-day contest held at the Aga Khan Academy, garnering 274 cumulative points, while Nairobi settled for second best with 259 points.
Rift Valley finished third with 122, Central was fourth with 82, Nyanza fifth with 76 whereas Eastern was sixth with 10. Western and North Eastern did not have swimming teams.
Nairobi girls outshone their Coast rivals, amassing 146 points, 31 more than the home girls who finished second. Rift Valley girls were third with 53 with Central (28), Nyanza (22) and Eastern (4) finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
The Coast boys, however, stamped authority, outpacing their Nairobi compatriots to top with 135 points. Nairobi boys garnered 89 points to finish second, with Rift Valley completing the top three with 89 points. Nyanza (46), Central (42) and Eastern (6) ranked fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Nairobi’s Macrine Kalombo showed class to top the individual girls’ rankings with 21 points, five more than her compatriot Kamwele Maina who was second with 16 points same as Nalwoga Mutinda from the Coast.
Audrey Chebet also from Nairobi, Eliana Maina and Atia Tendo from Coast were ranked fourth, tied on 14 points. Emma Miano from Coast, Nuru Azu from Nairobi and Rift Valley’s Nadia Vusha settled for seventh place after securing 13 points each.
Nairobi’s Curtis Kamotho emerged top in a tightly contested boys’ challenge after securing 18 points. Hakim Salim from Coast and Schuman Obiero from Nyanza finished second with 12 points, while Waswa Bongani of Rift Valley was fourth with 16 points. Jeremy Kogo from Rift Valley completed the top five with 15 points.
Top swimmers bagged their tickets to the East Africa games to be hosted in Kenya from August 14 to 22 in either Eldoret or Nakuru. The 70 swimmers, 35 boys and 35 girls, will be looking to reclaim the titles they lost to Uganda last year.
