It’s now down to the last four at national finals

A showdown is looming Friday as teams battle for finals slots at the ongoing Brookside Secondary Schools national Term One games at Shanzu Teachers College and Shimo La Tewa High School, Mombasa.

The last four teams standing in each category will have everything to fight for as they seek to secure direct tickets to the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association games, which will be held in Kenya from August 14-22.

Boys’ basketball defending champions Dr Aggrey from Coast will battle for survival against Lukenya School.

Dr Aggrey, faced serious verification issues leading to their reduction to just six players, will have to work harder against a Lukenya that has all the numbers they need.

Dr Aggrey recovered from their 71-95 opening match loss against Dagoretti High School, to beat Friends School Kamusinga from Western 75-71 and Pioneer School from Central 66-54 to book a date with Lukenya, who topped Group B with six points. Lukenya remain unbeaten, having won all their matches.

Former national and East Africa champions Laiser Hill will face off with perennial rivals Dagoretti High in the second boys’ semi-final encounter.

Laiser Hill, who are also depleted and will be playing with eight out of the standard 12, will be hoping to secure a place in the final, having missed last year’s final.

Laiser Hill captain Dynoken Ochieng said they will give their best for they want to play in the final.

“We will have to go all out since they have an upper hand due to our reduced numbers,” Ochieng said.

His Dagoretti equal Noah Wasike said they want to make up for their missed chances.

“Last year we finished fourth and didn’t qualify for East Africa games. We aim to secure out ticket this year and it starts with us winning in the semis,” Wasike said.

In girls’ basketball, holders Butere Girls from Western will play Nairobi’s Olympic High, while former champions Kaya Tiwi take on St Joseph’s Girls High School Kitale.

Butere, who are looking to retain their title, will be wary of Olympic who have returned stronger this year and are chasing their maiden trophy. Kaya Tiwi on the other hand are on a mission to reclaim the title they lost to Butere in 2023.

Record girls’ handball champions Moi Girls Kamusinga will square it out with newbies Kadika Girls for a place in the final.

Kamusinga have had a good run winning all their Group A matches, while Kadika finished second in Group B.
