The National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations will on Monday begin vetting Caroline Karugu, the nominee for Principal Secretary, State Department of East African Community.
Karugu, who is a Finance and Economics professional, formerly served as the Nyeri Deputy Governor and is a close ally of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and served in the secretariat involved in his African Union Commission chairmanship bid.
The committee chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech will also vet former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha who has been nominated to serve as the Permanent Representative to the Permanent Mission of Kenya to UN Habitat in Nairobi.
Nakhumicha has been out in the cold since the Cabinet was dissolved by President William Ruto following the Gen Z demonstrations in June 2024.
“I was the Health Cabinet Secretary then a campaign emerged in social media where it was said that Gen Z are falling down with senior leaders in government, I became a victim and lost my position and now engaging in farming,” she said.
Former Principal Secretary in the State Department of Sports Peter Tum will also face the Koech-led vetting panel after being nominated as Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the recent changes in government.

“It has been a great honor to serve in the Sports Department working towards reviving our sports ecosystem and driving the agenda of identifying, nurturing, and monetizing talent,” said Tum.
Former Principal Secretary in the State Department of Economic Planning James Muhati will appear before the panel for vetting panel after being nominated as the Consul General based at Guangzhou, China.
Former Principal Secretary, State Department of East African Community Abdi Dubat who was nominated to serve as the Consul General based in Arusha in the United Republic of Tanzania, will also undergo vetting.
