Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has pulled yet another surprise move, seeking to divorce his Democratic Party, from the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
Muturi has written to the Kenyan Kwanza secretariat, issuing a 30-day notice for DP to leave the coalition, in a letter signed by the party Secretary General Jacob Haji and Chairman Esau Kioni.
“Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments,” read the letter.
“DP, vide this letter, hereby gives 30-day notice to exit the coalition as stipulated in the termination clause (8) in the coalition agreement. This notice if effective from the date of this letter,” they added.
The letter has also been copied to Registrar of Political Parties and Secretary Generals for Ford Kenya, United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Maendeleo Chap Chap respectively.
The exit comes against the backdrop of Muturi seemingly breaking ranks with the government he serves.
Amid calls for his resignation, Muturi has stated he does not fear being dismissed by President William Ruto, despite openly criticising the government, especially over abductions. The CS’s revelation in January that his son had been abducted by state agents raised questions on his political game.
Critics say Muturi cannot continue serving in the same government he is publicly condemning while his supporters say he could be exercising huge intelligence and wisdom by not agreeing with what he considers wrong.
Although murmurs pointed to Muturi gearing up for Embu governor’s seat, currently held by Cecile Mbaririre seat in the 2027 election, reports have however indicated that the CS may not been keen on that route.
After he issued his statement, Muturi dismissed any political connotations to it, saying it was about discussing critical issues in the country.
