The Kenya Union of Post- Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Bomet branch has called for a police investigation into the mysterious death of Mike Yator, the Chief Principal of Kaplong Boys High School.
Yator’s body was discovered at his residence on Tuesday morning after he failed to report to work.
Kuppet Bomet branch Secretary Paul Kimetto urged the police to expedite investigations, emphasising that Yator’s family and the teaching community deserve answers.
“We, as a union, urge the state to expedite the investigation into Yator’s death so that his family can receive justice,” Kimetto stated.
According to reports, Yator was in good health on Monday and had welcomed students back from the half-term break. Kimetto noted that he actively engaged with students until 9:30 pm that evening.
However, when staff realized he had not arrived at the office the following morning, the school bursar was sent to check on him. Yator was found lifeless on a chair, with food still on the table.
Kimetto expressed his condolences to Yator’s family and friends, calling his death a tragic loss for the teaching profession.
“This is a regrettable incident, and I am deeply saddened by the loss. May God rest his soul in eternal peace,” he said.
Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga confirmed that an investigation is underway.
“We have already commenced investigations to determine the cause of his death,” he said.
Yator’s body has been moved to Siloam Hospital mortuary in Kericho County.
His death marks the second mysterious case involving a school principal in Bomet County.
In 2022, Isaac Wafula Bukhebi, the principal of Bosto Mixed Day Secondary School, went missing before his body was later found in River Nzoia.
A post-mortem revealed signs of food poisoning. “The presence of food poisoning suggests that the deceased could have been poisoned or may have poisoned himself. The marks on his body could also indicate that he hit himself on stones in the river,” read the police report in part.
