A Form 4 student at a school in Githunguri, Kiambu County, gave birth during her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

The young candidate, whose identity remains confidential to protect her privacy, went into labour while sitting for one of the national exam papers.

KBC News reports that the 17-year-old began experiencing labour pains in the examination hall, prompting swift action from the school staff.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she safely delivered her baby.

Luckily, the Ministry of Education recently implemented policies to support students’ rights to complete their education regardless of such circumstances.

Education officials confirmed that she would be allowed to continue with her exams as per education policies.

With the KCSE exams underway nationwide, stakeholders continue to call for the community to support students facing unique challenges.

Several girls delivered during 2024 KCSE

There have been several cases of young candidates giving birth during this year’s national exams.

In one such instance, a Form Four candidate from Laliat Secondary School, Kericho County, successfully welcomed a bouncing baby girl.

The 18-year-old was rushed to Kericho County Referral Hospital in distress, which forced her to undergo a caesarean section.

After welcoming the fruit of her womb, the teenage mother sat for her first two papers hours later.
